My Role
UX/UI Designer
(App & Design Systems)

Gale Healthcare Solutions created the Use Gale App to help healthcare facilities efficiently staff open shifts. However, following rapid growth after the 2020 COVID pandemic, the platform faced significant usability challenges—most critically, a high rate of clinician shift drop-offs and difficulties for facilities in filling open shifts.

I joined as a UX Designer on a 4-person UX team, working closely with developers and the product team. My responsibilities included identifying and addressing key usability issues, maintaining the existing design system while helping build a more scalable and future-ready version, and designing new features that improved workflow efficiency for the clinicians.

Through a combination of qualitative usability testing and quantitative analytics, we identified core issues driving clinician drop-offs: fragmented navigation, an unclear UI hierarchy, and most critically, inefficiencies in booking shifts and managing schedules. Nurses had to toggle between multiple views to claim shifts and were forced to rely on external calendars to track their commitments. The process of finding shifts that matched their availability was overly complex and time-consuming.

To address this, we introduced a unified scheduling experience centered around a consolidated in-app calendar. This new interface allowed nurses to view their schedules at a glance, manage availability directly within the app, and claim shifts with far fewer steps.

I designed and prototyped the new scheduling and availability flows, creating a visual system for shift status (booked, pending, available), time-of-day availability settings, and notification preferences. I also implemented interaction enhancements such as custom date pickers, collapsible calendar views, and simplified navigation between scheduling and shift search screens.

We validated these designs through iterative user testing with active healthcare professionals, using tools like Maze, clickmaps, and heatmaps to assess clarity, usability, and engagement.

In parallel, I led the effort to evolve our design system; establishing scalable UI components, consistent interaction patterns, and unified visual standards. This foundational work improved development velocity, enabled clearer cross-functional collaboration, and ensured future feature expansion could be executed more efficiently.

The redesign led to a 30% increase in task efficiency and significantly improved user satisfaction. By transforming a fragmented workflow into a seamless, intuitive scheduling tool, we delivered measurable value to both end users and the business.
