Project Overview

Causal Foundry, backed by Google.org and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is a public benefit company using AI to improve health and behavioral outcomes. Its platform analyzes data to deliver personalized recommendations, reminders, and incentives, ensuring people receive the right support at the right time through digital tools.

As the company expanded its impact, they needed to build an analytics platform from scratch, creating a user-centered interface that would make advanced causal inference technology accessible to healthcare partners in the Global South. The challenge was to translate complex data insights into actionable, intuitive experiences for non-technical users, enabling them to make informed decisions without deep technical expertise.

I also developed Causal Foundry’s brand identity, designing the logo, typography, and color palette to create a cohesive and recognizable visual system. See brand guidelines.

Design Process

I collaborated closely with data scientists and ML engineers to define and implement the UX/UI strategy, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and impact. Taking a human-centered design approach, I conducted stakeholder interviews with our internal team to identify usability challenges and inform design decisions. Since this was a new product without external partners for testing, we relied heavily on internal usability testing to validate design assumptions and refine interactions. Through iterative prototyping and testing, we optimized the interaction model, information architecture, and data visualization. My focus was on translating complex machine learning outputs into clear, actionable interfaces, allowing users to navigate and interpret data with confidence.

To support this, I built a branded design system from the ground up, establishing a scalable framework of UI components, typography, and interaction patterns to ensure consistency across the platform. I also worked closely with data scientists to design custom charts and data visualizations, ensuring they accurately represented intricate relationships while remaining intuitive for non-technical users.

Outcome & Insights

Causal Foundry’s new analytics platform enhanced data comprehension and usability, enabling healthcare partners to easily create targeted interventions and connect with their audience with greater precision. It helped simplify the process of creating cohorts for comparative analysis, allowing users to segment populations and assess intervention effectiveness more easily.

By translating complex AI-driven systems into actionable tools, the platform empowered non-technical users to design and deploy behavioral nudges, create experiments and A/B testings, and refine treatment strategies based on real-time data. Custom charts and data visualizations played a crucial role in this process, helping users better understand the outcomes of their interventions by clearly illustrating trends, correlations, and impact metrics—ensuring that data-driven decisions were both insightful and accessible.
